We are proud to be supporting CHICKS and the great work that they do.

CHICKS (Country Holiday’s for Inner City Kids) is a registered children’s charity, founded in 1992, which offers free, 6 day residential respite breaks for disadvantaged children from across the UK, who would not otherwise have a holiday that year. CHICKS aim to provide as many children as possible to have the opportunity of this life enhancing experience at one of their centres in either Devon or Cornwall.

CHICKS helps children from a variety of different backgrounds, just a few examples are children growing up in poverty, children of prisoners and kids that have been abused – either physically or sexually. This worthwhile charity also provide much needed breaks for young carers as
there is approximately 175,000 currently in the UK. Since 1992 they have successfully supported a staggering 7,000 children and hope that in 2010 alone they shall be able to provide breaks away for 1,200 children.

Throughout the week the children are encouraged, but not pushed, to take part in as many fun activities as they’d like. These range from outdoor activities like pony trekking, rock climbing and sport to arts and crafts such as clay modelling and face painting. Children also have the
opportunity to participate in playing board games, chess and get involved at the music centre for those who’d prefer to engage in something a little more chilled out.

CHICKS is getting increasingly successful each year and is recognised as considerably important, the charity is supported by many famous patrons, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Saunders and Alan Titchmarsh to name but a few. A shocking 1 in 4 children in England, Wales and Scotland live in poverty, to which the idea of a holiday away is sadly a luxurious dream. The
Southern Co-operative are very excited to be supporting the charity and are proud that our support shall help make the children’s dreams become a reality.
