A first for the funeral industry

Wokingham funeral co-ordinator Linda Lawton is one of only 10 students in the country to have graduated with a degree aimed at those building a career in the funeral service.

Linda Lawton from J B Hall in Wokingham was one of the first wave of students to qualify with a Foundation Degree in Funeral Services from the University of Bath.

The degree was developed in conjunction with the National Association of Funeral Directors in response to a evident gap in this area for a formal higher level qualification.

The students began their studies in 2008 and graduated at the end of last year, with the ceremony being held at the Assembly Rooms in Bath and followed by a reception at the Museum of Bath at Work.

The course primarily consisted of distance learning, with the students attending the University three times a year.

Linda commented: “The three years passed really quickly and there were a large number of challenging assignments to be completed – from “Global Funeral and Ritual Legislation” to “History of the Funeral Services.”

“I found the course very interesting and useful and would recommend the degree to anyone wishing to develop their career through formal study alongside the practical experience gained by working in the industry.”
