A local charity playschool has been selected as the fundraising partner for a new Southern Co-op store on Louden Way in Ashford, receiving a £1000 donation followed by a year’s partnership with the new store, which opened on 15 November.
Godinton Playschool was selected from a number of applications following a call out by Southern Co-op last month, and the partnership comes as part of Southern Co-op’s ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ scheme.
Claire Buckle, chair of committee at Godinton Playschool said: “We’re based right in the heart of the Godinton community and look after 40 of local two-to-four year olds who we nurture and get ready for their next step to primary school. In this, our 25th anniversary year we are delighted to be partnering with Southern Co-op. With the money they’ve donated, we hope to buy some sensory equipment for our SEN children to help them communicate, encourage play together and grow their confidence as well as make our garden to be a fun place for all!”
Gill Kenward, Manager at the new Ashford store said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Godinton Playschool today. We are really looking forward to organising some fundraising activities with them and have a few ideas already. My team and I are proud to open the store with them today and can’t wait to meet our new customers!”
Southern Co-op’s new 2700 square feet store at Louden Way has 15 allocated parking spaces and a team of 20 colleagues who will run the store from 6am-11pm daily. The store will be home to a Local Flavours range, a food to go selection which includes real Italian Lavazza coffee to takeaway and an in-store bakery which will bake loaves and pastries fresh every day. Southern Co-op is committed to British farmers and all the fresh meat it sells is 100 per cent British, including the meat used in sandwiches, snacks and ready meals. All sprouts and parsnips in store this winter will be 100 per cent British and at their seasonal, delicious best.
‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ is Southern Co-op’s community engagement programme. This initiative addresses four key social themes, as identified by a survey of over 4,000 members and colleagues, for promoting: ‘Greener Neighbourhoods’, ‘Healthier Neighbourhoods’, ‘Safer Neighbourhoods’, and ‘More Inclusive Neighbourhoods’.
Charities and community groups can also apply for cash donations or goods in kind through the ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ scheme, which is funded by the 5p single-use carrier bag levy.
