Local School Children Open New Southern Co-operative Store in Old Sarum

Old Sarum Primary School received a special invitation to cut the ribbon and open The Southern Co-operative’s new food store in Old Sarum, Salisbury, and received a £500 donation last week.

Mr. Jones, head teacher at Old Sarum Primary School, said: “This is a really significant moment for Old Sarum; everyone in the community is excited to be welcoming the new Southern Co-operative store. Old Sarum School Council will use today’s kind donation of £500 to fund an exciting new project called ‘The Old Sarum Challenge’ where children will take on leadership roles and responsibilities within the school to become ‘Learning Leaders’.”

Old Sarum Primary School open new Southern Co-operative store

The Southern Co-operative’s new store is home to a large range of fresh produce and chilled food options and a Local Flavours range with food and drink sourced locally.  The community food store will be open from 6am until 11pm, seven days a week with allocated customer parking as part of the Local Centre and a Paypoint facility.

Cliff Lovell, manager of the new store, said: “We are very excited to be opening this new store in Old Sarum and we are supporting Old Sarum Primary School because we want to engage with the next generation. It’s been great fun to see the kids in the store today and we are already receiving overwhelming support from our new customers.”

Eighteen new Southern Co-operative colleagues will work at the store which includes an array of pastries freshly baked and available in-store every day, a coffee machine and a cash point as well as lottery ticket facilities.

The fundraising partnership forms part of The Southern Co-operative’s community engagement programme, ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’. This initiative addresses four key social themes, as identified by a survey of over 4,000 members and colleagues, for promoting: ‘Greener Neighbourhoods’, ‘Healthier Neighbourhoods’, ‘Safer Neighbourhoods’, and ‘More Inclusive Neighbourhoods’.

Charities and community groups can also apply for cash donations or goods in kind through the ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ scheme which is funded by the 5p single-use carrier bag levy.
