Poole pupils cut the ribbon to open new neighbourhood store

The Southern Co-operative’s new neighbourhood food store in Alder Road, Poole, was officially opened by pupils from specialist local school, Langside.

The new store, which has created 18 jobs for local people, opened on Wednesday 16 September, and is now open seven days a week from 6am- 11pm. This is the latest store for the independent regional retailer, The Southern Co-operative, whose nearest stores to Alder Road in Poole include Penn Hill Avenue, Parkstone, East Howe Lane in Bournemouth and Ringwood Road, Poole.

Pupils, together with Jonathan Seaward, Principal of Langside School and Head of Children’s Services cut the ribbon to officially open the store together with store manager Craig Corkett. Langside, a specialist, special school run by the charity Diverse Abilities, supports children with very complex physical, learning and medical needs. Jonathan said: “The school is very keen to build links with the local community and businesses. Developing a new relationship with The Southern Co-operative will provide opportunities for our children to further enhance their life skills. We are very pleased to have been approached by them to open the new store and look forward to developing a close relationship”. The Southern Co-operative has donated £500 to Langside to celebrate the opening, which Jonathan confirmed: “will go towards providing specialist equipment that the children need to access the curriculum. A particular need at the moment is increasing our IT facilities; this donation will go towards touch screens, eye gaze technology and such like.”

Store Manager Craig Corkett said: “We look forward to welcoming customers to our new store and being an integral part of the local community. Working with organisations such as Langside is important to us, and we are keen to develop a long term relationship with them through activities such as volunteering.”

In addition to a bespoke range of produce including local snacking from Wilton Foods and Portelbay Popcorn, ready meals and an instore bakery, The Southern Co-operative’s new Poole store includes a free to use ATM plus Paypoint, Lottery and on site parking.
