Two Island food lovers, Jane Dixon and Gale Witts, are each enjoying a hamper filled with local food and drink from The Southern Co-operative, after being picked as winners of a free prize giveaway to celebrate the opening of its new store in Freshwater.
The store, which opened last month on Afton Road, stocks food and drink from over 35 Isle of Wight growers and producers, and is The Southern Co-operative’s flagship store across southern England for its Local Flavours range of local produce. Island suppliers include The Tomato Stall, Garlic Farm, Isle of Wight Cheese Company, Catch, Island Bread Company and Goddard’s Brewery. A dedicated ‘Fresh from the Island’ counter offers locally sourced meat, fish, cheese, savoury pies and more.
Hamper winner Jane Dixon from Newport, commented: “I always try to support the Island producers because the quality and variety of their goods is outstanding. I hadn’t visited the new store before and was surprised at the spacious, modern interior. All the staff that I spoke to were very friendly and there was a lot of Island produce to choose from. I was pleased to see that, as I think all shops should offer goods from smaller, local companies. In this instance I believe The Southern Co-operative could well be setting the benchmark. When I am in the area I will definitely be visiting the store again to ‘buy local’, as the food produced on this island is delicious and different.”
Gale, from Freshwater, enthused: “It’s the first competition I’ve every won and I love local food – so massive bonus for me!”
Customers at The Southern Co-operative in Freshwater can look forward to regular free tastings of the Local Flavours range, to encourage them to taste new products and support local producers.
