The Southern Co-operative store in Alresford has launched its 2104 Community Support Card campaign by announcing that Broadlands Group Riding for the Disabled will be the sole recipient of this year’s scheme to receive up to £15,000.
The Southern Co-operative’s Community Support Card (CSC) scheme, which is run in selected stores across the south of England and donates thousands of pounds to local good causes and charities each year, relies on customer support but without costing shoppers a penny. To launch the 2014 campaign in Alresford, which aims to raise up to £15,000 for Broadlands Group Riding for the Disabled, two ponies from the Group visited the store in West Street last Saturday (18 January), together with local MP Steve Brine and Head of Alresford Town Council, Cllr Lisa Griffiths. Colleagues from the store handed out free CSC cards to encourage shoppers to back the scheme.
David Fulton, The Southern Co-operative’s Retail Business Manager in Alresford, said: “This charity, which is run by such dedicated volunteers, makes an amazing difference to the lives of people it helps, so it was an easy decision for our bid panel that they be our 2014 CSC recipients. As well as helping with fundraising, my team in store is looking forward to getting involved hands-on too.” He added: “We’re appealing for the Alresford community to get behind the scheme simply by asking for a free CSC card at the store and having this swiped each time they shop here. The more the CSC cards are swiped, the quicker The Southern Co-operative donates towards the £15,000 total; it’s that simple!”
Nigel Hoppitt, Chair of Broadlands Group RDA, said; “Broadlands Group Riding for the Disabled based in Medstead provides therapeutic rides to local disabled children and adults. Being selected by The Southern Co-operative’s Alresford branch to be the recipients of their Community Card Support Scheme for the next 12 months was a lovely start to the year for the Trustees and all involved at the stables. As a local charity raising all the funds to care for the ponies this is a welcome relief from the pressure of fund raising and a boost for all those helping the riders and looking after the ponies. We look forward to working with The Southern Co-operative in Alresford to improve the local awareness and hope to increase the number of helpers we have from the local community.”
Broadlands Group Riding for the Disabled will also be holding an open day in the summer with the support of The Southern Co-operative for the local community to enjoy a family day out, find out more about Broadlands Group RDA and support the CSC campaign.
Last year The Southern Co-operative’s Community Support Card scheme in Alresford donated £10,000 to Busy Bees Pre-school in Bishop’s Sutton and £5000 to Alresford Rugby Football Club Minis. In total, over £180,000 was donated in 2013 by The Southern Co-operative’s CSC scheme to local good causes and charities across the south of England.
