Children who are receiving cardiac care at Southampton General Hospital Children’s Cardiac Services Ocean Ward have been given a pre-Christmas treat with a donation of new toys from Parkview Retail.
Richard Inglis and the Parkview Retail team, who run two The Southern Co-operative Welcome franchise stores in Wyndham Place and Terminus Terrace in Southampton, delivered £500 worth of new toys to help Ocean Ward with their entertainment activities.
Richard said: “Ward E, known as Ocean Ward, is a fantastic facility that accommodates children from birth to 18 years old who need cardiac care. The bright and welcoming environment has been carefully designed to put children at ease, and includes beds, quiet rooms and kitchen facilities for parents to stay with their children during these crucial times. Anyone with children knows how important this is, to stay close to your sick child, just to be close. The children make good use of any games and toys to help while away the time and keep them positive, so we went on a pre-Christmas shopping spree to help!”
He added: “Children on the ward accumulate gold stars for their participation in hospital procedures; anything from blood tests to operations. With these stars, they can then choose a new toy to play with and eventually take home with them. When we visited, we met Jake, who at 8 years old was full of beans, despite having already had one major operation and preparing to undergo another that day. He was delighted that he got first pick of the toys ready for his return to the ward later in the day! The ward, the staff and the children’s immense optimism made for a very thought provoking and humbling experience. Park View Retail is committed to helping the local community and we are glad that we could provide something of real use to these brave children.”
