Charity cycling in-store raises £12,800

The Southern Co-operative has raised over £12,800 for the charity Canine Partners with an in-store cycling challenge held in 20 stores across Hampshire, West Sussex and Dorset.

Each of the 20 participating stores had 24 hours to cycle as many miles as possible in-store on gym exercise bikes loaned by Fitness First. All money raised is being donated to Canine Partners, The Southern Co-operative’s charity of the year, which provides specially trained dogs to enable people with disabilities to enjoy greater independence and quality of life. The fortnight was timed to coincide with the Olympics and The Southern Co-operative’s own Charity Awareness Fortnight, between 27 July-10 August.

Portsmouth store to store relay raises money for charity

Colleagues working for The Southern Co-operative stores in Portsmouth are taking to the road on Friday 31 August to walk over 11 miles in a store to store relay to raise money for Canine Partners.

Weston Sports Football Club Under 10 team wins £1000 from The Southern Co-operative

Weston Sports FC Under 10 team has scored a £1000 sponsorship donation from The Southern Co-operative store in High Street, Southampton.

The £1000 cheque will be handed over to the club this Sunday (26 August) at a special presentation at Chamberlayne Leisure Centre, 150 Weston Road in Southampton preceded by a football match between the Under 10 teams to showcase their talent.

The Southern Co-operative launches new apprenticeship scheme

30 colleagues working for The Southern Co-operative (TSC) have joined a new apprenticeship scheme, launched to enable employees to develop their career within the company.

The apprenticeship programme, which is being run by national training provider First4Skills on behalf of The Southern Co-operative, is open to customer services assistants and team leaders working in its 160+ stores across the south of England. Completion of the year-long programme will lead to a BTEC qualification, as well as developing opportunities to progress into management positions within the company.

Co-operative Funeralcare in Ryde opens doors for charity

The Co-operative Funeralcare in Ryde is opening its doors on bank holiday Monday 27 August for Isle of Wight residents to find out more about the services that it offers and raise money for charity with a fun balloon race.

Hayling Island Bridge Advice Centre and Hayling United Football Club each score £15,000 from The Southern Co-operative!

Bridge Advice Centre on Hayling Island and Hayling United Football Club have benefitted from a total of £30,000 raised through The Southern Co-operative Community Support Card scheme.

The Community Support Card Scheme (CSC) is run in selected The Southern Co-operative’s stores. It enables local communities to raise funds by presenting a CSC card, which are issued free by the participating store, every time they purchase goods in-store. The more customers use the card, the more quickly funds are raised. Each year, local good causes wanting to apply for the funding can submit a bid, and recipient causes are chosen by a panel of local people working with The Southern Co-operative store team. A total of £30,000 has been raised over the past year to be shared equally between the Bridge Advice Centre and Hayling United Football Club.

Jayne takes the plunge for charity!

Jayne Brading overcame her fear of deep water to help raise funds for the Isle of Wight Earl Mountbatten Hospice at their recent Newfoundland Dog Rescue Day.

Jayne, who is Funeral Co-ordinator at The Southern Co-operative’s Newport Funeralcare Home, jumped into the River Medina in the name of charity to be dragged to safety by a Newfoundland rescue dog. Fund-raisers were asked to donate £20 for each rescue, and despite her fear, Jayne jumped in twice! With the support of The Southern Co-operative Funeralcare, Jayne raised a total of £150 for the hospice, and said; “I thoroughly enjoyed my day despite my reservations about jumping into the river, and the fact that it raised money for such a worthwhile charity, was the icing on the cake!”

Stockbridge Recreation Ground Trust and Football Club score £15000 from The Southern Co-operative!

Stockbridge Recreation Ground Trust and Stockbridge Football Club have benefitted from a total of £15000 raised through The Southern Co-operative Community Support Card scheme.

Bark’n Ride

20 Southern Co-operative stores across Hampshire, West Sussex and Dorset have been challenged to ‘get on their bikes’ and each raise £2000 for charity!

Timed to coincide with the Olympics and The Southern Co-operative’s own Charity Awareness Fortnight, colleagues at each participating store have 24 hours to cycle as many miles as possible in-store on gym exercise bikes loaned by Fitness First. All money raised through sponsorship and contributions in-store will be donated to Canine Partners, The Southern Co-operative’s charity of the year.

New Co-op store opens in Bristol

On the 25th July, 4 colleagues from Werburgh City Farm joined the store Store Manager to help cut the ribbon and open our newly reformatted neighbourhood Co-operative store in Ashley Down. The atmosphere was very joyful, the farm colleagues being very excited to be the first customers to see the new design of the store.
