Bournemouth store opening supports local play centre

17 jobs have been created with the opening of The Southern Co-operative’s newest store in Bournemouth (9 April).

The new store, which is located on the junction of Kinson Road and East Howe Lane, was officially opened by local charity, Fernheath Play and store manager Dave Strutt (pictured 1st on left). “The store has been really well received,” said Dave, adding: “our customers love that we are so conveniently located for them and they like the range of products available. We’ve been really busy since opening; it’s great to be part of the local community.”

Store’s £30,000 donation for Wittering community

Three local good causes are sharing a £30,000 donation from The Southern Co-operative, following the success of its Community Support Card scheme at its East Wittering store. The store is now inviting local charities and good causes to bid for a further £30,000 from the scheme for the year ahead.

Yapton Primary School pupils cut ribbon to open extended store

Pupils from Yapton Primary School officially reopened The Southern Co-operative store and post office in Yapton in West Sussex (28 March) which has been extended and refurbished.

Customers visiting the store on opening day enjoyed samples of West Sussex produce from The Southern Co-operative’s Local Flavours range stocked at the store, including Wobblegate apple juice, Bookham Sussex Charmer cheese, Deerview preserves, Goodwood Farm ale, lager and cheeses, Montezuma’s chocolate and High Weald dairy cheese. These and many more local products are now stocked in the expanded Local Flavours range in the new store.

£5000 target announced to benefit Odiham community

A community support scheme to donate up to £5,000 in the year ahead to two good causes in Odiham has been announced by The Southern Co-operative at its Odiham store.

The Southern Co-operative runs its Community Support Card (CSC) scheme in selected stores across the south of England and last year the scheme donated over £250,000 to good causes and charities across the south. If the Odiham CSC scheme, which will run over the year ahead, is successful, inOdiham and Buryfields Infant School will each receive £2,500.

Pedal power raises £500 for Sturminster Newton after-school cookery club

Colleagues at The Southern Co-operative store in Sturminster Newton got on their bike to raise £550 for Yewstock School cookery club to buy much needed equipment and ingredients.

Dan Haynes, Retail Business Manager at the Sturminster Newton store decided to step in and help the after school cookery club after it applied for funding from The Southern Co-operative’s Community Support Card (CSC) scheme; “Whilst their CSC application wasn’t one of the two recipients selected by the CSC panel, we decided nevertheless that we would raise the money for the club through some determined pedal power!” said Dan. He added: “I persuaded eight colleagues to cycle throughout the weekend on two gym bikes, kindly loaned by Sturminster Newton Leisure Centre, in return for sponsorship from our generous customers. It was a lot of fun and we raised an impressive £550!” Dan also invited the after school cookery club to run a morning cookery demo in the store using ingredients donated by The Southern Co-operative. These included healthy breakfast muffins and bars, vegetable stir fry and mini berry cheesecakes.

The Southern Co-operative achieves 2 star rating in Business in the Community’s 2014 Corporate Responsibility Index

The Southern Co-operative has today been recognised in Business in the Community’s annual benchmark of responsible business, the Corporate Responsibility Index (CR Index).

Since 2002, the CR Index has provided unique insight into how businesses are driving the responsible business practice that will help secure a sustainable future. The 2014 CR Index, which is being launched  as part of Responsible Business Week (31 March – 4 April), provided a more challenging set of questions than ever before and its findings indicate that real the progress is being made by UK companies to integrate responsible behaviour into their business.  This includes a growing understanding that responsible business provides mutual benefit, with two in three CR Index companies evaluating the economic value of CR to the business.

Bark at the Ball raises £12,000 for Canine Partners

A charity ball in Southampton organised by The Southern Co-operative in aid of Canine Partners has raised £12,000.

Around 300 people attended ‘Bark at the Ball’ at Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton (15 March). The dinner and dance included a charity auction which alone contributed £6000 towards the £12,000 total.

£1000 and additional collection points for Chichester Foodbank

In addition to a £1000 donation to support Chichester Foodbank, The Southern Co-operative has extended food collection points into three more of its Chichester stores.

Since opening in 2012, Chichester Foodbank has fed 2148 people (to Jan 2014) and is seeing a huge increase in demand, with 1667 people helped in the period April 2013 to end of Jan 2014 compared with 481 people in the previous six months.
