Professor Conaghan believes that cases of osteoarthritis, a leading cause of severe pain in hips, knees and hands, could double from 8.5 million to 17 million by 2030.

In a recent statement he declared that “action is needed immediately; we have to bust this myth that painful joints are inevitable part of getting older that we have to put up with.”

In the recent report; OANation2012, commissioned by Arthritis Care nearly 75% of people diagnosed with osteoarthritis complain of experiencing constant pain in their affected joints due to the condition, describing the pain as often “unbearable”.

Andrea Dipple, Managing Director at co-operative Xest, described these recent findings as “alarming” and called for more awareness of aids which can make living with osteoarthritis more comfortable and less painful.

She said that: “Being able to go about our daily lives without experiencing pain or distress is something that we are all sometimes guilty of taking for granted, but for sufferers of this debilitating condition, life can be very painful. Many people diagnosed with osteoarthritis however, do not realise that there are a huge range of specially designed aids that can make everyday tasks that little bit easier. Whether it is a Reacher for helping to pick things up or a Long Handled Brush to make brushing your hair more comfortable, there is always something which can help to make living with osteoarthritis less painful”.

The good causes set to benefit from the relaunch of The Southern Co-operative Community Support Card scheme at The Co-operative stores in Cowes have been announced. Cowes Youth Forum and Storeroom2012 are the two groups chosen by a panel of people from the local community prior to the start of the fundraising period.

We are officially launching the scheme with a family fun day that will take place at the Cowes Yacht Haven on the 27th of May, starting with 12pm. There will be Viking and Pirates re-enactments,  bouncy castle, face painting, live music offered by Stu Collins Music, Jack Gorman  and EnglanE and other fun activities for all the family. There will also be a BBQ available, selling high quality hamburgers and hot dogs.

The store will consist of 3014 sq ft of retail space and offers a broad range of chilled goods, fresh produce and butchery products; as well as the Co-operative ‘Truly Irresistible’ and Fairtrade ranges that the Co-operative is renowned for. An in-store bakery has also been introduced, providing freshly baked bread and pastries on a daily basis.

With the opening of the store, 14 new jobs are being created.

The fresh bright store has had a significant refurbishment, with new refrigeration allowing a bigger of range of chilled food to be available to customers. This is in addition to a much bigger range of fresh produce and the introduction of a new in-store bakery providing freshly baked bread and pastries on a daily basis. The new look store will also be open an hour earlier on Sundays, opening 7am -10pm seven days a week.

The total target for fundraising over the coming year is £15,000  with whatever amount has been raised once the fundraising period ends will be shared between the two organisations.

A fun community day was held and over 200 local families came along to join in the launch celebrations which included a tug of war and falconry display along with a recorder performance from pupils of the Infant School. Caroline Dinenage MP joined in the fun by handing out tug of war prizes to the children and finding out about the three recipients causes.

A fun community day was held last Saturday and local families, along with George Hollingbery MP,  braved the weather to join in the launch celebrations which kicked off with a Morris Dance followed by live music, Zumba  and a falconry display with a tasty barbecue provided by the Lions.
