Chobham store advances £4,600 community support in response to Surrey flooding crisis

An advance payment of £4,600 is being donated to Surrey Search and Rescue by The Southern Co-operative to fund much needed equipment in the current flooding crisis.

Surrey Search and Rescue helps the 999 services find missing persons and supports Surrey during major incidents and weather emergencies. Last May, The Southern Co-operative launched a Community Support Card scheme at its Chobham store to donate £10,000 over one year to be shared equally between two local charities, Surrey Search and Rescue and Link Able. However, in response to the on-going flooding crisis, The Southern Co-operative is donating the £4,600 as an advance payment from the fund.

Colden Common skate park gets a clean-up thanks to local store

Following a request for help by Colden Common resident Pam Glasspool, The Southern Co-operative has stepped in to fund and supply two new lidded bins for the village’s skate park.

Pam Glasspool explained why she sought help to rectify the litter problem in the park: “To visit The Southern Co-operative store in St Vigor Way, I regularly walk across the village green past the skate park where sadly there is always piles of rubbish on the ground. Picking up the litter, I saw that much of the rubbish is packaging from food and drink bought from the store the night before by the young people who gather there each evening. When I talked to them about their rubbish it was clear they are polite and responsible young adults who respect their environment as well as the brilliant refurbished skate park equipment provided by the Council. They said most of them try to keep the place clean but the broken old bins left everything open to the elements, with birds, animals and the weather helping to spread rubbish all over the place.”

This Christmas, Parkview Retail Ltd, a franchise of The Southern Co-operative, wanted to give a little back to Southampton’s most needy children, and as Franchisee Richard Inglis explained: “Southampton Voluntary Services has run a Christmas toy appeal for 34 years from their base in St Mary’s, and this is so close to home for all of our staff, we just had to do something to help! There are 3,000 names on the list of children who, without this appeal, may not even receive one present this Christmas.” Richard added: “Our staff gave up their free time to help make a difference and went shopping; with £200 donated by the store and more than £100 of our own stock, we were able to donate a very sizable amount of presents.  But it didn’t stop there, as some of our customers heard what was going on and contributed even more gifts!”
