On Sunday 26th June thousands flocked to Southsea to take part in Portsmouth Festivities ‘Space City’, inspired by the City’s motto ‘Heavens Light our Guide’.
Portsmouth Festivities is an eleven day annual arts festival presenting a diverse programme of events celebrating Portsmouth’s history and heritage, whilst providing opportunities for the young people, with a focus on engaging them with the arts.
Events feature professional artists, speakers and performers of international renown. A wide ranging programme includes concerts, talks, drama, dance, outdoor events, education projects, exhibitions and a platform for local performers.
For a third consecutive year The Southern Co-operative supported the Portsmouth Festivities as a proud sponsor. During the run up to the festivities period colleagues from across the business interacted with local pupils, teaching space themed lessons in Primary and Junior schools throughout the Portsmouth area. Colleagues helped run workshops for approximately 400 school children between the ages of seven and eleven about the importance of healthy eating, with a real focus being on ‘healthy eating for astronauts’. Pupils had to design a menu surrounding this topic and consequently were entered into a competition to see who had designed the most inspiring meal, for astronauts in space! They will receive their prizes in a presentation by the Lord Mayor in September.
The Southern Co-operative also attended Sunday’s event with colleagues at Castlefields selling various refreshments, with all proceeds going towards our Corporate Charity CHICKS. Volunteers were from all areas of the business and thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon!
The finale ‘Lift Off’ consisted of a carnival procession and a ‘Twilight Fire Spectacular’, which was supported by The Southern Co-operative, ended this years festivities with a BANG! Look out for the video coming soon to TSC Media Centre.
Many thanks to all that took part, or who attended the festivities. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
