Southern Co-op Donates £98,000 to Kick Off Charity Awareness Week

Southern Co-op is running a Charity Awareness Week from next Monday [24-30 July] and to kick off proceedings they are donating £1000 to each of the company’s charity partners, totalling £98, 000.

The donation comes from the remainder of money raised by the company’s ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ scheme, which is funded by the 5p single-use carrier bag levy, much of which has already been allocated to communities and causes in the south of England.

‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ is Southern Co-op’s community engagement programme addressing four key social themes, chosen through a survey of over 4,000 members and colleagues, promoting: ‘Greener Neighbourhoods’, ‘Healthier Neighbourhoods’, ‘Safer Neighbourhoods’, and ‘More Inclusive Neighbourhoods’.

In their Charity Awareness Week, Southern Co-op has also challenged colleagues in all their stores and funeral homes to raise as much money as possible for their associated charity partner.

Gemma Lacey, Director Sustainability and Communications said: “We have set up a Charity Awareness Week to highlight the importance of helping our local communities. We also thought it would be great to challenge our colleagues to raise more money for their charity partners and they have a great track record – throughout last year, over £262, 000 was raised for good causes by Southern Co-op colleagues, a remarkable achievement!”

From Monday, Southern Co-op branches will be holding events from coffee mornings to raffles. People across the southern region, from Exeter to Kent are encouraged to visit their local Southern Co-op branch to see how they can help raise money for local causes. Love Your Neighbourhood was set up by Southern Co-op in 2016 to empower each store, funeral home and office to support the issues that matter most to their members and neighbourhoods and in that year a total of £701, 514 was invested in local communities from the scheme.

Charities and community groups can apply for cash donations or goods in kind through the ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ scheme. For more information on how to apply, please speak to your local store’s manager, or visit:
